THE WRITING MENTORS

Here's a little about the spring 2008 mentors:

Megan Honeycutt, a junior journalism major, serves as assistant managing editor for the Crimson White, and is president of the student chapter of the American Copy Editors Society.
Daniel O'Donnell, a graduate student in public relations, has worked in museum PR and presently works for the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations.
Jessie Patterson, a senior journalism major, serves as managing editor for the Crimson White.
Amanda Peterson, a junior journalism major, serves as Campus Life editor for the Crimson White.
Ryan Wright, a junior journalism major, is assistant sports editor for the Crimson White and is presently writing stories for The Tuscaloosa News.

Mentors are selected by the Media Writing Center adviser (Wilson Lowrey, wlowrey@ua.edu) and must meet the following qualifications:

  • They must be either juniors, seniors or graduate students.
  • They must have at least two semesters working with campus media.
  • They must have at least one semester working with a professional media organization (through an internship, practicum or summer work) or one semester teaching writing.
  • They must have at least a B+ GPA.

Applicants submit resumes and three samples of their writing to the Writing Center adviser. In special cases the adviser may select a student who does not meet all the qualifications listed above, based on writing samples and other criteria.

Each writing mentor is paid a stipend at the end of each semester for working five hours per week over a 10-week period. This is the second year the APA Journalism Foundation has provided funding for stipends.
