ABOUT THE MENTORING SESSIONS

  • Sessions are held in Phifer Room 301, the journalism department photo lab.
WHERE IS ROOM 301? To find Room 301, walk across the third-floor bridge to the older section of the building. The room is across the hall from the brown-doored elevator. Students may walk in for assistance -- mentors do not take appointments. The Center will be staffed with one mentor at a time, who will sit at the computer station nearest the door.
  • JN 311 assistance: Mentors are also helping instructors coach students during lab sessions of JN 311, the introductory writing/reporting course.
  • Method of instruction: Mentors use a “coaching” method of instruction. They point out problems and the reasons for these problems, and they guide students toward their own solutions. Mentors are instructed to avoid simply proofreading copy, and prior to visiting the Center, students should edit the text for which they are seeking help. Sessions are limited to 30 minutes.
  • Records: Mentors fill out forms on each student’s visit to the Center. Forms help orient tutors in future sessions. Notes on the topic of the session and progress made are recorded on the form, as is the student’s name, course and major, and the forms are kept on file in the Writing Center.
  • Extra credit: Some faculty may decide to award class credit to students who visit the writing center. Students receiving credit should fill out a “Class Credit Slip” from the Writing Center’s main desk. These are filed in the Writing Center and are available to instructors.
  • At present, the Media Writing Center specializes in aiding writing for print and online journalism. Students who need help with academic papers or class essays should visit the writing lab in the English Department.
